Angled impact is the most common form of impact when falling, regardless of whether the fall is from (e.g.) a bicycle, skis or a horse. Rotational motion is a combination of rotational energy and rotational forces generated by the angled acceleration, which both affect the brain and increase the risk of (mild or severe) brain damage. When installed in a helmet, the MIPS protective system has been shown to reduce the rotational motion by redirecting the energies and forces that would otherwise be transferred to the brain.
